Bill to combat sex trafficking passes Senate

Salem, OR — Senate Bill 898, which will fight sex trafficking in Oregon by establishing another watchdog over strip clubs, passed the State Senate on a unanimous vote Thursday. 

“We must do more to protect underage girls who are preyed upon by the sex trafficking trade,” said Senator Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro), who introduced the legislation.  “This bill gives us another tool to identify women who are under-aged, working in strip clubs and at high-risk to be pulled into the illegal sex trade.”

Starr bill to protect victims of rape passes committee

Hillsboro, OR — Victims of rape will have another layer of protection under the law, thanks to a bill introduced by Senator Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro) and now moving through the legislative process. Senate Bill 522, which would allow a court to terminate the parental rights of a parent who is convicted of rape with respect to child conceived as result of that rape, passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday morning on a unanimous vote.

HB 2885

Revokes, rather than suspends, the driver’s license of a person convicted for the third time of misdemeanor driving under the influence of intoxicants.

HB 2338

Prohibits carrying minor in open bed of motor vehicle. Provides exceptions if minor is secured with safety device, or if vehicle is operating in organized parade. Provides limited exception if minor is in vehicle for employment purpose (and in compliance with rules and laws for worker transport), or is licensed hunter traveling between camp and hunting site during hunting season.

SB 795

Requires persons under the age of 16 to wear protective headgear when skateboarding, riding a scooter, or using in-line skates. Specifies a maximum fine of $25 for a violation.

SB 787

Permits the operation of electric personal assistive mobility devices by persons sixteen years of age or older on bicycle lanes, bicycle paths, and sidewalks, and on highways with posted speeds of 35 miles per hour (mph) or less. Allows a local jurisdiction to regulate or prohibit use of the devices. Exempts the devices from compliance with vehicle title, vehicle registration, and liability insurance requirements.

SB 764

Increases the number of intersections at which photo red light cameras may operate, to allow cities with populations of 30,000 or more to have such cameras at up to 8 intersections and cities with populations of 300,000 or more to have such cameras at up to 12 intersections. Requires yellow light at intersections equipped with such cameras to stay yellow for at least the time recommended by Institute of Transportation Engineers.

SB 661

Permits some commercial vehicles to be equipped with amber warning lights to warn others of a traffic hazard. Allows use only when vehicle is stopped at commercial work site or in highway work zones.
