SB 839: Address Confidentiality for Victims of Human Trafficking

May 4, 2009

Senator Starr’s SB 839, relating to “address confidentiality,” has also seen favor in the Oregon Senate in the past week. Also included in a former newsletter, we explained the issue of human trafficking in the Northwest and particularly how it's affecting Oregon. The rate at which trafficking is growing is certainly alarming, and Oregon needs to become equipped in ways to protect victims and prosecute the criminals who support this practice.

SB 839 would allow victims of human trafficking to be eligible for Oregon’s Address Confidentiality Program. Senator Starr realizes the value of cutting the link between the trafficker and the victim, and this bill helps victims elude those who might continue to pursue them and use them for trafficking means.

This bill unanimously passed the Senate on May 4th. The success seen by this bill is a result of the contribution of many groups. The support of Transitions Global, the Oregon Center for Christian Values, and the Department of Justice has been vital. We are looking forward to continued success in the House Chamber.
