Salem, OR – Oregon’s speed limit is behind the times. Senators Jason Atkinson (R-Central Point) and Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro) want to bring Oregon into line with its I-5 neighbors, who both have speed limits of 70 miles per hour.

Salem, OR — The Senate Health Care, Human Services and Rural Health Policy Committee heard testimony Wednesday afternoon on a bill requiring applicants for public assistance to take a substance abuse screening test. 

“Dolling out public assistance to those with a drug problem isn’t just a misuse of your hard earned tax dollars, but it empowers individuals to continue in destructive behavior,” said Senator Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro), the sponsor of the legislation.  “Oregon’s assistance programs should never be used to facilitate this type of behavior.”

Salem, OR — Senate Bill 898, which will fight sex trafficking in Oregon by establishing another watchdog over strip clubs, passed the State Senate on a unanimous vote Thursday. 

“We must do more to protect underage girls who are preyed upon by the sex trafficking trade,” said Senator Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro), who introduced the legislation.  “This bill gives us another tool to identify women who are under-aged, working in strip clubs and at high-risk to be pulled into the illegal sex trade.”

Hillsboro, OR — Victims of rape will have another layer of protection under the law, thanks to a bill introduced by Senator Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro) and now moving through the legislative process. Senate Bill 522, which would allow a court to terminate the parental rights of a parent who is convicted of rape with respect to child conceived as result of that rape, passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday morning on a unanimous vote.

 Salem, OR – Thursday lawmakers received news the state’s expected revenues are down another $377.5 million.  This brings the total decline since the end of the 2009 Legislative Session to $1.268 billion.  Still, the halls of the State Capitol in Salem remain largely empty.  Senator Chris Telfer (R-Bend) wants to change that and renewed Republican calls for an emergency session of the Oregon Legislature.
